The Saffold ladder has an innovative folding mechanism which allows the anti-slip rungs to close neatly inside it's profile when it isn't in use. The closed ladder has a profile of only 74mm and has a "drainpipe like" appearance which helps to ensure that it doesn't draw unwanted attention to itself.
The ladder can be opened from either the top or bottom (depending on the individual requirements) by removing the anti-tamper pin or using the optional key lock. The ladder will open outwards away from the wall with the rungs folding down into place as the outer leg of the ladder extends.
Once open, the ladder has a profile of 390mm and will form a secure, permanent secondary fire escape or means of regular access. The ladder has extra wide (340mm) rungs which make it easier for people to use and has been load tested to BS EN 131-2: 1993 for a maximum load of 300kg per modular section.
The Saffold ladder is assembled using modular sections of 1.5m, 1.8m and 2.7m lengths. This unique design allows the ladder to be made to almost any length, and ensures that we can offer a ladder to suit most applications and requirements.
Each ladder section is connected together, onsite, using the joining kits supplied and can be made up to 10m long. The ladder has been engineered to be self-supporting, with each rung adding to the technical load-bearing capacity of the overall ladder.
Access from Multiple-Floors
Additional release stations can be incorporated into the Saffold ladder to allow it to be accessed from multiple floors, making it suitable for use on multi-story buildings.
The release station has its own locking pin which allows the ladder to be released from an additional floor without restricting user access to the rest of the ladder from higher floors. If a higher section is released while the lower section is open the two sections will meet creating one full length of ladder.
How to Self-Install the Saffold Ladder
The Saffold ladder is designed to be installed by a competent person with a general understanding of DIY. Each ladder is supplied with a helpful installation DVD, all the necessary fittings and 2 masonry drill bits.
The outer leg of the opened ladder must NOT touch the ground. This is important to avoid any rubble blocking the full opening of the ladder
Joining Ladder Sections Together
After removing all outer packaging from the ladder, place two sections across two chairs or similar with the wall brackets facing downwards.
Open the ladder sections and keep them open with wooden blocks. On the lower section remove the ‘L’ shaped aluminium cover (if applicable).
To join the two sections of the ladder first screw a connecting plate to the inside of the back of the ladder (the side with the wall brackets) by threading the screws from the outside to the inside of the ladder and securing them with nuts.
Now connect the other legs of the ladder sections using the threaded plate and chamfered screws.
Fit the additional rung that is provided by fitting bolts from the relevant side and tighten the nut from the other side, being careful NOT to overtighten.
Fitting the Ladder to the Wall
Once you have decided how close the ladder needs to be installed to the window the vertical position of the ladder will need marking.
From the ground, measure 40cm and make a mark on the wall (point A). This is where the bottom of the ladder will need to end. This ensures that when the ladder is deployed, there is enough space for the outer leg of the ladder to fully open.
Measure the ladder from the highest hole on the back of the ladder to the bottom of the ladder (length B)
From the mark on the wall (point A) measure upward and make a second mark on the wall (point C) where the highest hole on the back of the ladder will be (length B). At the second mark a hole should be drilled and a pilot screw fitted. This is to enable the ladder to be hung in position during the marking of the bracket positions and also to check the correct positioning of the ladder before full installation takes place.
To drill the hole for the pilot screw start by drilling a hole using the 8mm drill bit at point B (depth approx. 60mm).
Change to the 12mm drill bit and finish off the bore up to a depth of approximately 60mm.
Fit a plug into the whole and then the screw. Leave approximately 10mm of the screw standing proud from the wall to allow for the ladder to be loosely hung from this pilot screw in the next stage.
Hang the ladder on the pilot screw, ensuring that it hangs straight. The highest rung, when open, should ideally reach the middle of the window and must be high enough to allow safe handhold when exiting out of the window. To test this, open the ladder and check position of rungs. Do not climb onto the ladder at this stage!
If you are happy with the position of the ladder start to mark the screw positions for the wall brackets. Do this by using a centre punch. WARNING: Ensure that the ladder does not move during this process.
After marking all the holes, remove the ladder from the pilot screw.
Using the 8mm drill bit, drill each marked position to an approximate depth of 80mm.
Change to the 12mm drill bit and drill each hole again. Then fit plugs to each hole.
Hang the ladder on to the pilot screw again.
Place a washer over each screw and push the screws through the bracket holes into the plugs; only finger tighten them at this stage. This ensures that all holes are in the correct position before they are fully tightened.
Fully tighten the screws one bracket at a time. After the screws on each bracket have been tightened, open the ladder to ensure that it opens smoothly before going on to the next bracket. If the ladder becomes stiff to open this is probably due to the wall not being straight. Slide some of the provided distance plates behind the wall bracket where there are gaps.
Once the ladder is installed the lock pin will need to be fitted to the relevant locking hole on the ladder. If the ladder is to be used as an escape ladder the pin is usually fitted at window height.
To avoid accidental loss of the anti-tamper release pin secure it to the ladder with the chain and screw provided.
